Book Review: "Think Of A Number" - John Verdon

Think of a number between 1 and 1000. Do you have your number? Good. I guarantee that by the end of reading this book it will be a 10.

Short summary

Retired NYPD detective Dave Gurney is contacted by an old acquaintance by the name of Mark Mellery, who has been receiving letters in which a mystery person, signed "X. Arybdis", writes a series of poems, first creating panic and fear as he predicts the exact number Mellery is thinking about.

"What he took he will give, when he gets what he gave"

Gurney then proceeds to try and uncover not only the mystery behind the letters, but also the identity of the perpetrator. When Mellery is murderd and the crime scene evidence left behind is found to be strategically placed there, making no sense at all, it quickly becomes clear that the culprit is smart, cunning and hungry for more blood.

Diving into the world of mystery, murder and the past, Gurney finds himself in a game in which only one can prevail.

Characters

Dave Gurney: incredibly intelligent, introspective and insightful, yet has many interesting flaws that make him more relatable. He analyses everything and everyone he sees. He possesses a mindset of extreme alertness and skill. With each page, a new layer of his personality is portrayed in such a way, that one can simply not get enough.

Madeleine: nature loving, not to be underestimated and full of surprises. She is the inspiration behind a lot of cracked puzzles and poems, as she constantly shares her input. She wishes for Gurney to settle down into their new way of life, but deep down is aware of Once a cop, always a cop.

Hardwick: an ironic and cynical cop. Not extremely important in the first book, yet his character does appear in the second book, dominating a role in the foreground (that's why I included him)

Sheridan Kline: The district attorney, extremely obsessed with press and publicity that will benefit his career. He employes Dave as a special investigative consultant in order to keep the rather famous and newly retired detective on the case. He also appears in the second book.

Review

"Think Of A Number" is one of those books you read in one night because it grips you with such a force it's very hard to stop. Before I read this book, I never really was that fond of mystery crime thrillers. Something about them always seemed so repetitive. This book however, is what introduced me into the world of crime fiction and made me love it with all my heart. I have since reading this book proceeded to read the next two in the "Dave Gurney" series, which both impressed me immensely.

John Verdon writes with such detail and attention, which is part of the reason the book is such a suspenseful and thrilling read. The poems in the book were so gripping, that I even got inspired and gave poetry a try. (and failed miserably) While reading this book, I felt like I was present in Dave Gurney's brain. I could read his every thought, which I admit could get very heavy on the mind sometimes, but nevertheless made the storyline so much more original and heart stopping.

"You and I have a date,
Mr. 658"

The number aspect is what really got to me from the very beginning to the end. I honestly couldn't put the book down and it was the main motivation behind the 24-hour-read. The result fascinated me, as it was unlike anything I had read. The mystery and puzzles were thought out with incredible detail, which along with the wide range of individual characters balanced out the whole book in the best way possible.

The killers few monologs changed things up a bit, often putting various clues into perspective and creating an even more suspense-packed storyline.

In conclusion, I not only recommend this book to crime novel lovers, but also to people, who want to add something new and unique to their reading experience. "Think Of A Number" is the source of my newly found love for books in this genre and has exceeded my expectations sky-high.

A little message for my readers:

It's good to be back. I missed blogging. I have been contemplating wether or not I should also start reviewing books on this blog for a long time and finally decided that I wanted to. You do not know me, but if you did, you would know that I am a bookworm. A real big one. I normally fly through one book in a week.

Well, long story short, this is my first book post and I would like to know if you liked it and if it's something you would like to read about in the future. Your opinion would mean a lot to me, as I am unsure if books fit into the type of blog you guys are used to. So, leave some feedback here or on my social media platforms, it would definitely help me out!

Also, if you are registered on goodreads, you can see more of my book reviews there!

Film list: Movies coming out in 2015/16 (that I wish were out already)

Hello and welcome to my newest wizard post! Today I'm going to be sharing some films that I just can't wait for. THEY NEED TO COME! But unfortunately they haven't been released yet... so I just watch the trailers - over and over. So without further a do, let's jump into the list of movies I wish would be in theatres already.

Trailers will be included for all of you lazy people out there like me, so that you don't have to head over to YouTube (and let's face it: once you watch one trailer, you usually start binge watching random trailers - or is that just me?!)

1.) Suicide Squad

This is definitely the movie I'm most excited about. I've always been a fan of DC in general, but the trailer just did it for me. Justice isn't always black and white and DC shows that in the trailer. There is a very thin line between justice and crime. The Suicide Squad basically does the governments dirt work, killing terrorists and other bad guys. Things, that they don't want the public to know.

It took me some time to figure out the timeline - it takes place  before Batman vs. Superman, so right in the middle of Man of Steele and BvS. According to Empire Magazine, it was Batman who put the entire Suicide Squad into "prison".

Suicide Squad will premiere August 5 2016, so we will have to wait for a while until we get to see the real thing.
What do you think about Jared Leto as Joker?

"You know what they say about the crazy ones..."

2.) The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2

I would have been crazy not to include Mockingjay Part 2 into this list. Though I am sad that the franchise is ending *cry*, I will watch it like ripping off a bandage - Quick and fast (but not without pain)

For all of you who read the books, don't expect to know everything that's going on in the movie. Because judging from the trailer, they've made quite a few changes.

Check out the first clip of Mockingjay Part 2 here!
The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part to will come to theatres on November 20th.

"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the 76th Hunger Games"

3.) Deadpool

FINALLY another R rated superhero movie. Ryan Reynolds looks like he does a great job acting in the movie, judging by the trailer (anything of his looks good in comparison to Green Lantern). I love how he threw in a joke about Green Lantern (in the trailer below)

Overall I just can't wait for this new Marvel film to come into theatres. It's going to be a blast.
"Deadpool" first hits theatres on February 12, 2016.

And yes, I put the Red band trailer in this post (obviously)

"Daddy needs to express some rage"

4.) Demolition

After Nightcrawler and Southpaw, everyone knows Jake Gyllenhaal. That recognition is well deserved. In my opinion, he's probably one of the best actors out there. That alone would make me go and see his new film "Demolition". But it looks really good. I wouldn't be surprised if Gyllenhaal wins an Oscar soon.

The release date of "Demolition" is set to April 6, 2016.

5.) Our Brand Is Crisis

I know what you're thinking. "That's such a bad name for a movie!" I agree. But it peeked my interest and it looks like a great drama. And look at the cast - I couldn't have wished for a better mix of great actors.

"Our Brand Is Crisis" is in theatres October 30th.

6.) Race

The trailer hasn't been out for long and I feel like people don't even know this exists. The film is about the track and field star Jesse Owens, who won four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games.

I was sceptical at first because Jason Sudeikis is in this movie and I'm not overwhelmed by his acting skills. Seeing him in a serious film is definitely different and one of the reasons I'm not going to let the casting stop me from checking out this movie.

"Race" comes to theatres February 19, 2016.

"Out there there ain't no black and white, there's only fast and slow"

7.) Carol

This might be the film that wins Cate Blanchett a third Oscar. When I watch the trailer it feels like so much more than a good old romance. I read the book by Patricia Highsmith and fell in love with the story. If you are looking for some reading material, check out the book. I highly recommend it.

Back to the film - I recommend that too, without having seen it yet. Alone by the emotions you get hit with during the trailer, I can assure you - this movie is going to be epic. Oh, and who doesn't love Rooney Mara?

Carol is coming to movie theatres quite soon, November 27th to be exact.

"There are no accidents and everything comes full circle"

I think "Carol" is the perfect way to end this list. I hope you enjoyed reading and maybe a few of you even discovered some films you want to watch. Let me know if there are different movies that you are excited for! Until next time people.

5 new shows to watch Autumn 2015

Autumn - the season of TV show premieres. (That's right, the Pumpkin Spice Latte's can wait) September is the January in TV business. It's the peek of the iceberg, the time for channels and networks to experiment. It's also the time that is very crucial - in some ways, a TV show's future partly depends on the views it gets at this time. With this post I will be counting down my pick of 5 TV shows that will premiere this Autumn. Let the countdown begin!

1) Quantico (ABC Family)

"Quantico" follows the lives of a group of 50 people, all of them different and all of them have different backgrounds. They have one thing in common: they are recruits training at the FBI Quantico Base. The individuals have various reasons for joining, however, most of their decisions are linked to their pasts. All of them in a fierce competitive competition, the recruits uncover secrets and lies about each other. That was nine months ago. Flashing forward to when they are training graduates, one of them is suspected of orchestrating the biggest attack on New York since 9/11.

Being described as "Grey's Anatomy meets Homeland", it's surely one of the most anticipated shows this Autumn (and the one I'm looking forward to the most). Although I haven't seen the pilot, I disagree with the description - to me, it has striking similarities to another ABC Family drama: "How To Get Away With Murder". The flash backs/forwards have the same function, drawing the viewers into a twisted net of lies, spies and mystery.

The drama is to be aired September 27th. Click here to watch the Trailer!

2) Blindspot (NBC)

A mind erased. A body of clues. "Blindspot" focuses on a unidentified and naked woman found in Times Square with a map of tattoos on her whole body. Her discovery leads to a vast net of future crimes, wanting to be solved and stopped. While Jane Doe's identity remains a mystery and the FBI follows the road of ink, they recognise her value - not just as a map to future crimes, but also as an asset to the team, as she proves to have (very) useful skills.

Although the drama's pilot already aired September 21, "Blindspot" is an honourable mention. New episodes come out every MondayClick here to watch the trailer!

3) Minority Report (FOX)

Minority Report is a series based on the popular movie (named the same) that starred Tom Cruise. The show has a science fiction, crime and drama vibe and is the sequel to the 2002 film. For people intrigued by this show, I recommend watching the film beforehand (if you already haven't).

A decade after the end of Precrime, aka. the year 2056, Dash, one of the Precogs, attempts to lead a normal life, while still getting incomplete visions of future crimes. Haunted by the images of death, he attempts to stop the crime from happening, but always seems to come to late. Soon he pops up on Detective Vega's radar and the two try to prevent crimes, while concealing his identity, as many have set out to put the Precrime programme in motion again.

Minority Report's pilot aired September 21st - catch new episodes every Monday. Click here to watch the trailer!

4) Lucifer (FOX)

As Satan (Tom Ellis) gets bored in hell, he retires and comes to LA to start a new life. In the course of events, Lucifer meets Chloe, a police officer. Convincing her to let him join her, the two become some sort of team. Of course, he has his charms: he has the ability to draw out people's deepest darkest thoughts. But something bothers the devil: his ability doesn't work on Chloe. Will the devils vacation in LA turn into a stay-cation? Prepare yourself to see the devil in all his glory.

Even though Lucifer aires in 2016, I just couldn't exclude it from my list. The series based on the DC Comics is something to look forward to. Click here to watch the trailer!

5) Limitless (CBS)

Another film adapted into a TV series! The storyline takes place after the events shown in the film. Limitless follows Brian Finch, who is offered the powerful drug NZT-48. With this drug, his world changes, as he becomes one of the smartest people to have walked the earth when on this pill. He can remember everything he's ever seen, heard or read. With the NZT, Brian is also given another drug to stop the side affects. The FBI becomes very interested in discovering why he shows no side effects and offers to collaborate with him, by finding the NZT dealers.

The very promising show first aired September 22nd. Catch new episodes every Tuesday on CBS. Click here to watch the trailer!

This concludes my list of 5 new TV shows to watch this Autumn. Let me know which series you are planning to watch!

Fixation Friday: Sense8 (Season 1 Summary)

Credit
Are you sensate (aware)? Because that is what the Sci-fi drama "Sense8" is all about - showing you the bigger picture.  Get ready to be sucked into a complex world that deals with politics, sexualtiy, religion, different cultures, science, identity and humanity.

In honour of the announcement on Aug. 8th 2015 that the critically acclaimed series "Sense8" has been renewed for a second season, I decided to break down season 1 for you. After doing so, I will interpret and review the series.

Quick explanation "Fixation Friday": This is a new idea of mine, where I will discuss shows that got me hooked.
There are thousands of hidden gems around and I would love to discover more.
Share your list of TVshows that you are obsessed with in the comments! (or on Twitter by tagging me)

Short summery & definitions
Sense8 tells the story of 8 strangers around the globe, who suddenly have a special connection with each other and are being hunted by an organisation of extreme power because of their "abilities". These 8 people, who come from different parts of the world and all live in different cultures, are both mentally and emotionally linked.
(Detailed summery further down)

Sensates

A "sensate" is a person that maintains a certain connection with other people. These people, who come from different parts of the world and all live in different cultures, are both mentally and emotionally linked.
Sensates are not human. At least not human the way we define it. It is suspected that they were the first and original human species to live on earth. They are more human than the average person because of their bond to each other and nature.

Clusters

A "cluster" is a group of sensates. The cluster that is explored in the foreground of the show consists of 8 people.

To find out more about the specific definitions, click here to read about the Mythology of Sense8. (I really recommend reading this, if you are new or old to the show)

Characters

Nearly all of hem have a rather hard past, which we get to see through flashbacks or stories. Those memories still haunt them today and in season 1 we get to see them deal with those.

Throughout the course of the season the cluster grows closer to each other. Specific characters form tight bonds with others and they learn to act as a unit.

There ability allows them to use each others skills, which helps all of them when in hard situations.

  • Nomi (Jamie Clayton) - a transgender female blogger, who lives with her girlfriend Amanita. After an accident she is told she needs a lobotomy - this causes some problems with her family and you get to watch her deal with the judgement, hate and misunderstanding she receives for being transgender. She manages to break free with the help of her girlfriend. Amanita is the only outstanding (human) person who knows about Nomi and her connection with the others and believes in it.
  • Lito (Miguel Ángel Silvestre) - a gay telenovela actor, who struggles with life in the spotlight. His sexuality is unknown to the public and he is scared of what would happen to his image if he would come out. His boyfriend Hernando and him start a relationship with a third party, Daniele. After a lot of drama, Lito realises he has to stand for who he is and has to be brave.
  • Will (Brian J. Smith) - a Chicago cop, who thinks he is going crazy when he starts to get visited/visits other sensates. He also forms a special bond with Riley, which eventually turns into love. He looks into Whispers eyes, which means his cluster is now in danger. Lets see what will happen in Season 2! He also spends a lot of time with Jonas.
  • Riley (Tuppence Middleton) - a DJ from Poland, who left her home to go to London after her Husband and child died. Riley becomes especially important in the last few episodes, where she has to make a hard decision in order to help her new love, Will.
  • Wolfgang (Max Riemelt) - a german safecracker with a very dark past: he killed his abusive father. After his friend Felix is in danger, Wolfgang has to protect him from some of his own family members. He also gets to know Kala better and both of them support each other throughout the season.
  • Capheus (Aml Ameen)- a bus driver from Nairobi, who gets involved with a drug lord and starts working for him. As the situation gets uglier, Capheus is torn between "quitting" and staying because that's the only way he'll get medicine for his sick mother.
  • Kala (Tina Desai)- a scientist from india who is to have an arranged marriage. While unsure if to go through with the marriage, as the concept of tying the knot with a man that she does not love isn't quite how she imagined her wedding, she also can't shake the growing liking she takes to Wolfgang.
  • Sun (Bae Doona)- to save the family company, Sun takes the fall for a crime her brother committed.  Just before her father wants to come out with the real truth, her brother kills him to save his own skin. Sun also struggles with feeling alone, but finds comfort and a new family in the cluster.
  • Jonas (Naveen Andrews)- isn't a part of the new cluster, but is a sensate. He tries to help the new cluster as much as he can.
  • Dr. Whispers (Terrence Mann)- is also a sensate and leads the agency that hunts other sensates for some unexplained reason (probably to neutralise or kill them) He can't visit members of the cluster if they don't make eye contact with him.

The bigger picture

While living their lives, 8 individuals have a vision of a woman named Angelica shooting herself. This marks their rebirth as "sensates", humans who share a mental connection which allows them to access each others feelings, skills, language and knowledge. They can also visit each other and communicate while being in entirely different parts of the world. They form a cluster, their birthmother being Angelica.
In order to explain the phenomenon, they have to figure out more about their "condition". As Jonas, another sensate, steps in to guide them and shed some light onto their new sense, personal problems from the individuals start to grab the attention of the other cluster members and together, they learn how to control and use their new (and each others) skills. Jonas's end motive is to protect the newly formed group from Dr. Whispers, a sensate who hunts his own kind.
In the last episode, Riley is taken captive. The only reason she is still alive, is because she is unconscious, which makes it impossible for her to look into Whispers eyes, so he can get access to her mind. As Will flies to Poland to break her out, he seeks help from the cluster and with joint effort they manage to break Riley out. But with their victory comes a new problem. Will accidentally looked into Whispers eyes. Still being followed by the Doctor, Will knows the only way the cluster will survive is if he doesn't know what's going on with them. He makes himself unconscious and the plan of escape goes smoothly, with all 8 cluster members (including an unconscious Will) on a boat, drifting into the sunset.

Interpretation & review

This show has had a lot of mixed reviews - I happily call myself someone who loves "Sense8". Though the characters and their personality are a little cliché at times, I don't really mind. And yes, (if you have read other reviews or find this yourself) the first two episodes are a bit confusing, as you get hit with so much information. But that's how the main characters must feel too. It does need getting used to and I'm not promising that everyone will like it, but please do give it a chance. Underneath the surface, there is so much more to the "Sense8". And you get that a lot in the show. Of course, everyone has a first impression, but as the story unfolds and you learn more about the characters, you understand their reasoning and get more invested in them and the show. At least it was like that for me.
The series is probably the most unique thing I have ever watched. It's an original idea and deals with so much things that are important in this world, but a vast part of the entertainment industry chooses not to include too much, as things like politics, gender, sexuality and identity are things to which everyone has an subjective opinion. Things like those can risk a shows popularity.
And that's why not everyone will like "Sense8". You need to be very open minded and give it a chance in order to enjoy it. This web series is different from anything I have ever watched. I'm not even sure if the words"series/show"even fit that well because "Sense8" is it's own thing. It is a pure individual among so many other stories out there and deserves to be recognised as such.
If I had to choose one word to describe the message behind "Sense8", it would be empathy. In the end, the show shows us that everyone can connect with each other. It doesn't matter who you are or from where you are - there is always a way to bond with a person. This show reaches so far into humanity and doesn't question or judge people or their actions, but rather accepts them as a fact of life. Everybody has their flaws, but they don't define us 100%. And "Sense8" captures that perfectly.
Hands down, Netflix has done a great job, but most importantly the creators and producers are the ones that made the show so special. Camera, locations, script and acting was breathtaking, I couldn't have hoped for a more unique cast. All in all, "Sense8" exeeded my expectations and pushed the boundaries of shows.
What did you think of season 1? What is your take on season 2? Let me know!

"I'm loosing my mind."

"Scream Queens": Get ready to shit your pants.

That's right - Get ready indeed to shit your pants with fear and laughter, because we just got to see the opening credits. The pilot episode of FOX's horror comedy is to be aired September 22nd.
Let the countdown begin!

"You belong to me" are the words we get to hear over and over again followed by screams in the newly released opening credits. Creepy, right?
"Scream Queens" is definitely one of the most anticipated shows for Fall 2015 television and not only because of the well known actors. It brings an interesting mix of gore and dark humor to the table, making it exactly my cup of tea. Good job Ryan Murphy!

Also, Ariana Grande (aka Chanel #2) and Nick Jonas (Boone) are nowhere to be seen in the opening credits! Are their characters going to die?

You haven't heard of Scream Queens yet?
20 years after a mysterious death in a sorority, another murder takes place, plunging the college into a pool of fear. Especially the head sorority lead by mean girl Chanel (Emma Roberts) get's a lot of the bloody action. Many of the girls get attacked by a man (or woman?) in a red devil costume.
Who will be the next victim? Is this some kind of revenge for the death in 1995?
We will get to see the mystery unfold, the drama build up and the death rate rise - all of that accompanied by the big question: Who is the Villain in the red devil mascot suit?

If you haven't seen the trailer, I recommend checking it out! (below)
Also, you can get to know the characters better, by clicking here to visit Scream Queens on Youtube! Stay tuned for more updates on "Scream Queens"!

Stitchers Season 1 Finale - Did Cameron DIE?

Last night's "Stitchers" finale brought a roller coaster of emotions with it. Coming closer to solving the unknown mystery about the stitchers programme and her mother's and father's involvement within that programme, Kirsten also gets to see blasts from the (or should I say her) past. And finally,  one of the most important questions all "Stitchers" fans are asking themselves - is Cameron dead or alive?

As Cameron (Kyle Harris) and Detective Fisher (Damon Dayoub) get shot, leaving Fisher in ICU due to internal bleeding, Cameron makes the ultimate sacrifice to help ID'ing the shooters accomplice - he stops his own heart.

Kirsten FINALLY knows about Camerons feelings

Cameron planned on stopping his heart for 4 minutes, giving Kirsten (Emma Ishta) a 3 minute window to stitch into her partner in crime. During the stitch she got to see Cameron's most precious memories, which (to her surprise) all involved her. "I had no idea" she says as she sees the flashes of them in the past. The Camsten feels!

Kisten's and Cameron's past connection

Sticking to their past, Kirsten also finds herself in another memory of Cameron's; A memory from a long time ago. In a hospital a young Cameron, who just got out of heart surgery, wonders through the hospitals hallways, finding himself in Kirsten's mothers hospital room. Kid Kirsten then goes on to tell "Dr. Cameron" that her mother had been in a car crash but her father was going to save her. They had already met as kids, which makes for an even more interesting storyline, that could be further explored in Season 2.

The cliffhanger

After bouncing out of the stitch, Kirsten and the team anxiously gather around Cameron's dead body while a specialised team tries to retrieve him. But it's not going too well. Kirsten begs Cameron to wake up, while the unmistakable sound of the flatline is to be heard. Will Cameron make it? Let's hope so.

Kirstin learns the truth about her condition

Moving away from Camsten and to Kirsten's parents, we also find out a new big shocker - Kirsten's dad gave her "temporal dysplasia" ! Click here to find out what "temporal dysplasia" is! We all remember that Ed Clarke left Kirsten a bunch of clues, ending with a key. Well, that key led Kirsten to a safe-deposit box, which then led her to finding a video of her father, while the very first "test run" of the stitchers programme was done. Who was the subject? - Kirsten's mother. The stitcher? - a young Kirsten! Unfortunately, the attempt to bring Kirsten's mother back to life doesn't go so well, leaving Kirsten with temporal dysplasia, her mother dying and her father leaving her with Ed Clarke.

While this is all very shocking news, a few questions still get answered. The Stitchers programme was designed especially for Kirsten (as a way of saving her mother)!

What I noticed

Linus's outburst on Camille was also very wondering. While it is understandable for him to feel a tad left out, his childish behaviour did show a new side of him. I'm #teamcamille on this one!

Also, I really noticed Kirsten's and Camille's development in their friendship (right before the shooting). It went from "forced to live together" to mutual respect and now, maybe even to a fairly "normal" friendship?

Lastly, Kirsten's overall evolvement, putting her "unable to have feelings" in the foreground, really caught my eye. She has changed so much throughout the season and the writers did a great job in showing that.

Thoughts on "Stitchers" 1x10

Overall, I couldn't have hoped for a better finale. It showed some heartbreaking scenes, answered some long wondered questions and left me waiting for more. I really hope Season 2 will roll right around the corner! I'll definitely stay tuned to see more of Kirsten's journey in the Stitchers world.

What did you think about the finale? Let me know in the questionnaire above!

Open Questions for Season 2

Will Fisher be okay? Did he find a clue to Ed Clarks death?
Is Kirsten's and Cameron's past connection important?
Who hired the shooter and killed him as a message to Kirsten? Could it be Kirsten's mother? Is she really dead?
Where is Kirsten's father?
Will Cameron survive?
